Its been a long while since I posted here, well anywhere. I have been busy finishing my Practical Project Management course and sort of starting a new job. Blue Hills Brewery

Anyway, Sara (my wife) has been in the last stretch of her last semester for her doctorate. A lot of paper writing and I have been skating a bit as well. I lost one skate (WTF?) and had to guy a new pair. We are working with a dog trainer for our Husky. She got "attacked" and has been a little jumpy and assertive since then. The training is going well. We are not able to take her to our apartments dog park to play because she has realized that she can jump the fence. So now are walking her even more and luckily we can mush her a bit on the bike (she pulls sometimes, most of the time she just runs along next to you).

As you can see we have been busy and we gots our problems........

Today is my Pap-pap's 60th birthday! Man, time flies when you are having a great life! I love you dad. You have always been there for me (for us, the family) regardless of our situation or yours. You have always been a positive model and moral compass that has continued to shine it's way through my life. We haven't always seen eye-to-eye on everything and we probably never will but there are very few people in my life I consider my best friends. Please feel free to take that as a threat :)

Anyway, I just want you to know that I love you pops! Your great. I made this (non-traditional) birthday card for you as a reminder that you always have family support and to keep limber and on your toes! :D And keep on smiling, and oh yeah..... Jazz Hands!!!

Don't Mess with the Daily Show

I will gladly admit that I lean to the left, I proudly voted for Obama and I have been a fan of The Daily Show since Craig Kilborn and his 5 questions and when Bill Murray wrote the seldom used lyrics to the opening. BUT, Jon Stewart is the man! It seems like this is the only news oriented show (granted its a little left, but they are more than willing to nail either side of the isle when its due) that really holds people accountable in any way what so ever. They are not there to kiss celebrity ass and lob softball questions. These guys (gender neutral) are ready to throw down. So my best advice - Don't give them reasons to. I could pick from an endless amount of clips to support my argument but I will chose this one.

The moral of the story here is, "Don't' Mess with the Daily Show - they will own you, and in a hilarious and highly embarrassing fashion".

My wife and her family have this running joke about the blighted neighborhood of her youth. She grew up in a suburb of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I grew up outside of Flint, Michigan (although it was a pretty nice small town, I will admit). So here she is with her blighted youth and tales of woe.

So last night she was telling me about a class she had in middle school where they got to do screen printing, block printing and design and create packaging for their own made up products. She was saying , "You would have loved that class!" Oh, the blight, I have to give her credit for being able to get through that and still make something of herself. How dare they subject kids to such things....

I think my favorite story is how her elementary Principal used to get up on the roof of the school and throw candy down to them. oh, the humanity!

Anyway this is a small tribute to kids who have had a rough go of it, keep the faith - things can turn around and just keep your nose to the grindstone, work hard and make the best of what you have! By the way the singer featured here is Kay Pettigrew - Check her out here!

I am a big proponent of being green and doing your part to take care of the planet. I recycle, use fabric shopping bags, we have energy saving light bulbs, I have a battery free flashlight. I even downloaded an ink-saving font. I drive a diesel car (I know not the best but I am looking to go to biodiesel asap). I think that there are many, many things that we can reuse and we live in such a disposable economy. I am really excited about President Obama and his push for greener technologies.

I greatly applaud corporate responsibility. It is harder and harder these days to find a corporation that cares about the actual product that it is making and not just the almighty dollar it can provide. That being said here is a shout-out to a company that is taking being green to the next level.....

Congrats to us for electing our new President. We did some good with this guy. In tribute to someone who could potentially become my new favorite President I wanted to post this about my current favorite - our 7th President, Andrew Jackson.

During his term he fought against the National Bank, wanted to abolish the Electoral College, he admitted Michigan into the union, was the first President to have bodily harm done and be shot at, was a POW and he fought in 13 duels and killed a guy.

That's the whole package baby. His nickname was "Old Hickory" because of his toughness.

All that is going to be tough for Barack to top. I thought his speech today was inspiring. He could be great, if he can do the things he talks about - he could go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents in American history. He could be right next to Andrew Jackson.

Congratulations to President Obama and congratulations to us for electing a great new voice and a promising leader.

Family Christmas Card

I know this is a little late in the season but it is something that we had really hoped to do and the time just slipped away. On the Christmas Eve service that we went to the pastor discussed Christmas cards and the habit of putting pictures of families on them and not the Christmas message. He concluded that he thought that it did not take away from the Christmas message and story but only helped bring the family's love and cheer to one and all.

Happy 2009 to all!

Here is to a great new year. I am eager and ready to welcome a new year of fun, changes and good times. We just got back from a quick trip to NYC. We were there on the 29th and 30th and it was more than crazy busy for me. I can not imagine being stuck there for New Years Eve. Sara also posted about this here.

Anyway, we went to a neighbor's place last night for a little shindig and had a good time with some of our "heights" com padres. We are getting so old - we were home by 11:30 and had to talk each other into staying up at least till midnight to celebrate. We made some quick calls to our families and hit the sack. Party on.

I also want to take the chance to remind folks that I make money from the ads on my blog here. I have my own finicky holiday tradition. I am pretty sure I started it around 1994 so I guess it's a pretty good one. I listen to this song on Christmas Eve:

I have to admit that it has been difficult getting into the holiday spirit this year. With all the things going on in our lives, school, travel, jobs, etc... I just got my shopping done yesterday and gifts wrapped this morning. Sara still needs to finish her shopping. I am going to get some decorations up today. We have a poinsettia but no tree (yet). This is our first Christmas without our extended families. It's tough but it's nice to just spend some time together, just the two of us. This is a great opportunity to create a new "family" tradition together.

Well, I realize that it has been quite a sabbatical for me on this blog and to those two or three of you who actually check it, I apologize. I have been sick. I have had the same damn cold for three weeks now. Now I have this really awesome cough that I can't kick and once I start I can't stop. I know (mother) that I should go to the doctor at this point but my insurance is just so crappy and I really don't want to pay for it.

On a similar note, my pup has learned that the Kleenex box is the best toy dispenser ever. She has totally destroyed my last two boxes of tissues (almost full at the time). There is absolutely no way to be mad at her because it is one of the funniest things you have ever seen. She just pulls them out one at a time. Too Funny.

Anyway, I am hopefully getting back on track here and with my health. And also:

Welcome Ella Mae Plachta. She is a Halloween baby. I got to meet her just 4 days old down in Austin, Texas. Adorable! She and her mommy and pappy are doing just great. So are her three dogs. Hi Nanners!!!

My folks were just in town this last week and it was really great to see them and spend time together. As I grow older (and so do they) I relish our time more and more. It's always difficult to see them age but at the same time its rewarding to have an adult relationship with your folks.

I read something lately about writers and readers and how the more brutally honest a writer can be the more fulfilling it can be to the reader. Who knows if that is really the case or not but there seems to be some truth in that to me. I've had some extra time lately and have been using it to get healthy (after four years of traveling almost non-stop) and to spend time with my wife and puppy.

As time and life goes by, it really hits home to me about how important friends and family are; jobs, cars, apartments/homes, stuff comes and goes but family is forever.......

It's funny, my goal in the beginning of this thing (all of 1 month a go) was to post something on here daily, keep it interesting for anyone (?) who might be reading. It's amazing how difficult that can be. I always feel the need to say something with substance, something that might impact but I just end up talking about the weather! This is a classic. I remember what is was to have Quayle as VP - embarrassing! Even as a younger person I could see how this dude was not qualified and thank God nothing ever happened to Bush senior while in office. I am sure that the Democrats have had their share of questionable VP picks but this whole Sarah Palin thing is just beyond belief. Talk about pandering, shameless. I think the best part of this clip is that Bensten's comment seemed to have hurt Quayle's feelings, too funny! Any way, I for one will be glued to my television for the debate tonight. Biden is being put into a difficult position. Whatever approach he takes the Republicans can claim that he is beating up a poor defenseless woman. My issue is she shouldn't be a poor defenseless woman, she could be Vice President of the United States. She needs to be able to hold her own against anyone regardless of her gender. So that being said - Go get 'em Obama/Biden! And here is to a good, fair, honest debate on the issues.

Man, I love sweatshirt weather. The cool breeze, the fresh smell of the fall air, rockin the hoodie and jeans - outstanding!
It's funny how you can feel certain ways about temperatures. I guess its just the memories and experiences we connect with them. For me fall is new starts; back to school, sports, spending time with friends, marching band and rocking the hoodie.

My pup managed to destroy my newest favorite hoodie so I am in search for a new, new favorite. It's got to be soft and just the right size and fit. Again, funny to feel certain things about certain collections of fabric.

Fitness Time

Since I have been skating more often I have really gotten the fitness bug. I got some stuff for my birthday (thanks babe!) and am eager to put it to use.

At the goalie clinic I attended we did an hour of off ice training including agility ladder drills, reflex drills and some cardio stuff. I found a couple of web sites that go through and give quick videos on different drills that can be done with cones, agility ladder and jump ropes:

One more year till 30! I am actually looking forward to that milestone, 29 is kinda a lame age. One of the best parts of the Birthday is talking to friends and family on the phone, hearing my niece's sing "Happy Birthday". I used to have three years worth of Birthday songs saved on my old phone, it was the best pick me up for a bad day to listen to the serenade!

America's Favorite Ball Park

Well I have been to four Major League parks as of today. It's funny, we have lived in Boston for 4 years and this is the first Red Sox game that we have been to. It was a lot of fun (even though they lost - to TORONTO!)

I have been to Tigers Stadium, Comerica Park, Wrigley Field and now Fenway. It's actually areally cool group of parks to have been to. They are all pretty amazing in their own ways.

We are watching our friends dog, Russo again. Its great it keeps both him and our dog very entertained. They wrestle and growl and roll around. Twice the walks, twice the fun!

....and now twice the naps. Rock!!!!

I was looking for a youtube video of the "old" SNL sketch with Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon, "Dog Show". Dang! Couldn't find it it's probably on Hullu somewhere but you would have to go through a bunch of episodes. Great sketch - they are dog obsessed and dress their tiny shaking dogs in different clothing and talk about what they are thinking and doing over the coarse of the day. Fantastic.

SNL starts a new season this Saturday with what's his name the Olympic swimmer dude as the host. Should be interested, I am eagerly awaiting new episodes, uncorrupted by the writers strike this year. My DVR will be filling up quickly. Although I greatly miss Tina Fey (great on 30 rock). Lover her.

Summer, Out!!!

Well, I guess summer is winding down. It never ceases to amaze me how fast time flies. I was trying to think back on what I did this summer and I was able to come up with a (albeit to short) list:

Time with the puppy! We finally got a dog this summer, it has been a great and wonderful thing. We have spent many, many hours at the dog park and taking her for walks and adventures. She is a husky mix so we are really looking forward to her experiencing her "first" winter.

Moving! We had to move out to have our apartment remodeled. We now reside in a "luxury apartment". Wow. It was a definite hastle, two weeks - we had to vacate. We packed up all of our earthly belongings into a POD and headed for Michigan for two weeks only to come back and unpack. It's not all bad, moving always helps you get rid of your crap and really get reorganized as you unpack and move back in. We are still getting situated but it is a much better situation.

Hockey!!! I have had much more time lately and have been able to skate frequently. I got on a goalie board online and was able to start subbing for teams and that eventually got me a spot on a team roster for the fall season. I attended my first goalie camp, super fun - learned allot. It's just good exercise and one of my true loves.

Camping! We have gone for a few overnights here and there this summer, definitely not enough for my wife, the camping fiend :) But it has been fun and I think our pup really enjoys it as well. We went to a State Park on Cape Cod and one in Maine as well.

During our time back in Michigan we also got to see some Friends and family and that is always the best! Although we didn't take a big "summer vacation" this year we did pretty well with our numerous "stay-cations". I am looking forward to the fall, it is really my favorite time of year. Good time to bust out the hooded sweatshirts! (At least the ones that the puppy hasn't chewed up!)

NHL is coming

For those of you who were not aware - the NHL is starting up in October. (www.nhl.com) This years outdoor game is January 1st in Chicago. Wings V. Hawks in Wrigley!!! Outstanding. I recently signed up for Direct TV and now have the NHL Network. I am ready for the new season, BIG TIME!! Go Wings!

And welcome, I will do much better at keeping up on this daily. It may or not be that interesting but I will do the best I can.
